How a Hiring Process Can Improve Employee Performance

A leading manufacturer (Company A) made improving employee performance and reducing safety incidents a priority and decided to start by overhauling its hiring process. They partnered with Select International, conducted a thorough job analysis to identify key competencies, and set out to build a legally defensible, competency-based selection system.

They implemented a four-step selection funnel—EZ App, SecureFit screening, the Select Assessment for Manufacturing (SAM), and a physical production exercise—and ran a concurrent validation study. Results showed clear predictive validity: SecureFit “Very Good/Good” hires performed around the 60th percentile while “Poor/Potential” hires were below the 50th and Poor Fit candidates were 3.5× more likely to have a safety incident; SAM scores differentiated strong and weak performers (maintenance bottom 10% rated at the 17th percentile); and top performers on the production exercise received higher performance ratings—demonstrating the process reliably identifies safer, higher-performing hires.
