How TalentClick Helped Strengthen an Award Winning Safety Culture

Valero Energy faced a safety challenge after Valero Renewables acquired several Iowa plants and brought on many workers from farming backgrounds with little experience in comprehensive process safety. Following two incidents at sister plants, HSE Manager Mark Wescoat engaged TalentClick to integrate its Safety Self-Awareness training and the Safety Quotient™ (SQ™) assessment into Valero’s award-winning safety programs to strengthen worker decision-making and reduce incident rates.

TalentClick deployed the online Safety Quotient™ to pinpoint individual safety-related behaviors, delivered personalized classroom training, taught managers the six safety-linked personality traits, and certified Mark through a train-the-trainer program for ongoing delivery. The initiative drove strong learner outcomes (84% would recommend the training, 82% expect it to be effective in the future) and, per Valero Energy’s HSE Manager, produced visible improvements in safety behavior and reductions in injuries, environmental spills, product losses and quality issues.
