How the Employee Experience platform "Smart Workspace" replaced a complex tool mix

DHL, the global logistics leader with about 600,000 employees in 220 countries, faced a major communications gap: roughly half its workforce—operational staff like delivery drivers—had no access to the corporate intranet and were excluded from digital workplace tools. To reach employees on private mobile devices, simplify a complex tool mix, and enable fast, localized communication, DHL piloted an employee app based on Staffbase in 2017 that later evolved into a Staffbase-based Front Door Intranet called Smart Connect.

Staffbase delivered the employee app (Connect) and expanded solution that became the Smart Workspace front door, integrating with Microsoft 365, SharePoint and Teams and using features like personalized “Spaces,” launchpad apps, and secure authentication. The rollout reached all 600,000 employees, with more than 60% activating Smart Connect; internal surveys show 96% of office employees are familiar with the portal, 75% feel enabled to use it daily, and 70% say it positively changed how they work. Early pilot metrics and use cases (e.g., 70% click-through on important notifications) and operational anecdotes demonstrate clear improvements in reach, engagement and on-the-job collaboration enabled by Staffbase.
