The Electoral Commission partnered with Squiz to prepare for the high-profile 2016 EU Referendum, commissioning a dedicated microsite alongside their main Electoral Commission and About My Vote sites to ensure voters knew how to register, how and when to vote, access campaign information, reach all demographic groups, and interact via social media. Squiz supported the build using its Matrix CMS and Edge Network to deliver a flexible, recognisable microsite that could be rapidly deployed despite an uncertain referendum date and overlapping election traffic.

Squiz implemented a distinct referendum microsite linked from About My Vote, applying the Electoral Commission’s neon campaign creative and integrating social features such as Facebook’s “I’m a Voter” button to drive traffic. The site, built on Squiz’s Matrix CMS and protected by Squiz Edge technology, handled a traffic spike of over one million sessions in a single day without degrading user experience, making content easy to find and helping voters participate confidently in the referendum.
