The University of Edinburgh, a world‑ranked institution managing nearly 50,000 web pages across 1,500 sites, needed a replacement for the deprecated Google Search Appliance to deliver fast, relevant, mobile‑friendly and secure search across multiple sites and repositories. Squiz partnered with the University to deploy Funnelback, a responsive search platform designed to index and categorise the University’s extensive content while providing reporting and analytics.

Squiz conducted an audit and phased implementation—creating a centralised index with per‑site configuration, relevance tuning, authentication integration, responsive UIs, and training—resulting in Funnelback indexing more than 50,000 pages and supporting 1,500 websites. The Squiz solution improved search relevance and user experience, enabled secure search for restricted content, provided detailed reporting to reduce duplicate content and guide content decisions, and shortened the time required to implement and tune search.
