New, Powerful Search Tool to Improve SEO, Reduce Duplicated Content, and Address the Needs of Internal and External Users

Macmillan Cancer Support, a UK charity providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support to people affected by cancer, needed a single, intuitive search solution to make diverse content β€” from clinical internal documents to public campaign materials and social media β€” discoverable and accessible. They engaged Squiz, deploying Squiz search alongside SharePoint to address duplicate and out-of-date content, index social channels, and meet the needs of both internal and external users.

Squiz implemented a split architecture for intranet and website search, embedding a custom search page in SharePoint that lets users toggle internal and external results, indexes multiple Macmillan sites (and social content), and integrates taxonomy controls so Macmillan can surface the best content for each context. The result was increased findability, faster and more relevant search results, search added to the Macmillan Evidence Portal, tools to manage corporate taxonomy, and an extensive amount of duplicate or outdated content identified and archived β€” improving intranet experience and delivering measurable business benefits for Macmillan Cancer Support.
