A New Search Platform to Bring Order to the Content Chaos and Improve the Search User Experience

University College London (UCL), a top‑ranked university serving a 43,000‑strong student community, faced a brittle, fragmented search ecosystem across dozens of websites and more than 700 content owners. Much of the estate lacked consistent metadata and governance, causing poor relevance and discoverability, so UCL engaged Squiz to deliver an enterprise search platform to unify search, improve relevance, and give content owners better tools to manage content.

Squiz implemented a phased solution—starting with a content and analytics audit—then deployed a flexible metadata schema, faceted navigation, tailored search experiences, relevance tuning, content governance and knowledge transfer to UCL’s in‑house team, plus integrations for analytics and reporting. The result was a searchable, consistent search experience across the UCL estate with improved relevance and discoverability, empowered content owners, and ongoing insight for continuous optimization provided by Squiz.
