96.5 WTDY-FM Philadelphia (part of RADIO.COM/Entercom) ran a competitive #ArtistOfTheSummer voting campaign to settle the seasonal debate and turn fan passion into measurable growth. The challenge was capturing and validating millions of tag-and-hashtag votes across Twitter and Instagram while extracting audience insights and expanding the station’s social reach.
Using Sprout Social’s Listening, the station tracked submissions that tagged its handle, named an artist and used #ArtistOfTheSummer, ran nine elimination rounds (starting with 44 artists), and incentivized retweets and follows for extra points. The campaign’s Listening Topic captured 21.9 million messages from over 637,000 unique authors, trended on Twitter, crowned Louis Tomlinson the winner, and delivered more than 17 million engagements and 168,000+ new Twitter followers—plus actionable audience insights for future programming.
