Freshworks integrates Spotinst Elastigroup to automate AWS-Opsworks on Spot Instances

Freshworks, a B2B SaaS company with 11 products and a global SRE team managing thousands of AWS servers and peak traffic of 0.5M requests/min, faced rapidly rising AWS costs and needed to run OpsWorks-managed EC2 workloads on Spot Instances without rearchitecting. The challenge was integrating Spot lifecycle events with AWS OpsWorks while preserving Freshworks’ uptime SLA. They evaluated and adopted Spot (Spotinst Elastigroup) as the Spot automation vendor to address this gap.

Spot integrated Elastigroup with Freshworks’ OpsWorks by mapping each OpsWorks layer to a dedicated Elastigroup, automating replacement of Spot interruptions (often predicting interruptions 15–20 minutes ahead) and falling back to On‑Demand when needed to preserve availability. Using Spot, Freshworks now runs hundreds of EC2 instances across multiple AWS accounts, gained better cost visibility, and achieved immediate cost reductions—averaging roughly 65% savings on migrated instances—while meeting uptime requirements.
