Woman’s Hospital - Customer Case Study

Woman’s Hospital, a private nonprofit women’s specialty hospital in Baton Rouge (252 beds, over 8,100 annual deliveries), faced historic flooding in August 2016 that knocked out landlines and many cell towers just as call volume surged. With a 15-person call center supporting about 50 medical offices and 300 physicians, the hospital urgently needed a reliable, auditable way to contact staff and providers during widespread communications outages.

By using Spok Mobile integrated into Spok Care Connect (console, on-call scheduling and web directory), operators sent secure, HIPAA-compliant messages and confirmed receipt in 15–30 seconds, making Spok Mobile the de facto channel during the crisis. The solution helped manage a 27% increase in call volume (about 5,600 extra calls), enabled rapid provider contact and delivery receipts, and led the hospital to expand Spok for leadership communications and mass notifications.
