Virginia Hospital Center - Customer Case Study

Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) is a 394‑bed, not‑for‑profit teaching hospital in Arlington, VA. After rolling out Epic in 2016, VHC found a patchwork of communication tools that hindered interoperability, clinician workflows, and patient‑safety goals. Leadership sought a single vendor solution that could integrate tightly with Epic to reduce one‑off systems, eliminate paper on‑call schedules, and give operators and clinicians immediate access to patient information.

VHC implemented Spok Care Connect (console, on‑call scheduling, web directory) integrated with Epic to automate ADT‑triggered workflows, bed turnover and cleaning alerts, admit notifications to charge nurses, and EEG order routing to on‑call staff. The integration eliminated paper schedules, gave operators instant patient context, reduced call volume and manual lookups, automated Joint Commission‑required notifications, and measurably increased operator efficiency and clinical coordination.
