A Spok Case Study
University of Utah Health, the Mountain West’s only academic health system, faced inconsistent and slow sepsis recognition and response due to manual vital-sign recording and paging workflows. Because sepsis is time-sensitive and a leading cause of death, the system launched an initiative to hardwire sepsis detection and speed rapid response team activation to improve outcomes.
Using Epic to calculate MEWS and Spok Care Connect to deliver automated clinical alerts, the hospital routed tiered notifications directly to charge nurses or the rapid response team so clinicians reach patients immediately. The streamlined workflow produced faster bedside care, boosted clinician satisfaction, was rolled out system-wide, and yielded an early 20% reduction in mortality for patients with MEWS scores of 7–11.
