A Spok Case Study
University of Utah Health, the Intermountain West’s only academic health system with more than 1,300 physicians across four hospitals and 10 clinics, found its 2010 SMS-based paging solution unreliable and insecure—suffering carrier delays, dead zones, and use for unprotected PHI that raised HIPAA concerns. IT and clinical leaders recognized the need for a modern, integrated, secure mobile communication platform.
After learning about Spok Mobile in 2011 and running pilots, the system rolled Spok Mobile out system-wide in June 2013. Adoption grew rapidly—nearly 800 active users and over half of incoming residents chose the app—resulting in faster, more reliable delivery of critical messages, improved clinician workflows and satisfaction, and plans to replace 500 nursing Wi‑Fi phones and expand EMR and monitoring integrations.
