A Spok Case Study
Roswell Park Cancer Institute, a National Cancer Institute–designated comprehensive cancer center in Buffalo, N.Y., faced critical communication breakdowns during a 2011 expansion that disrupted its paging system. With 133 beds and more than 3,500 employees, RPCI needed a reliable way for providers and staff to exchange urgent messages quickly to support efficient patient care coordination.
RPCI made a strategic leap to smartphones, secured discounted devices and improved campus cellular and Wi‑Fi coverage, then deployed the Spok Mobile secure texting app integrated with its directory and on‑call scheduling. After targeted pilots and a coordinated rollout with training and a mix of hospital‑issued and BYOD devices, staff gained encrypted messaging that includes patient details, faster access to on‑call colleagues, and improved accessibility—resulting in time savings and stronger clinical communication and patient care coordination.
