A Spok Case Study
Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), a leading 205‑bed orthopedic hospital in New York City, faced a critical vulnerability after Hurricane Sandy: its communications hub and single alarm panel were located in a basement just feet from the East River, risking loss of access to medical, gas, and fire alerts and jeopardizing staff coordination and patient safety. To prevent future outages, HSS needed a more portable, flexible way to monitor alarms and run operations remotely at a moment’s notice.
HSS implemented Spok Care Connect® operator consoles and clinical alerting, consolidating 12 alarm systems into a single, location‑independent workflow so operators can monitor and respond from any workstation (and eventually from home). The solution improved response times, increased contact center adaptability, and strengthened organization‑wide communications, with plans to expand Spok’s capabilities further.
