The customer, meemoo, the Flemish Institute for Archives, faced the challenge of making its vast digitized audiovisual archives searchable. Manually adding descriptive metadata labels to 170,000 hours of content was an impossible task, so they turned to vendor Sopra Steria for an AI-driven solution that could operate within strict ethical and privacy standards.

Sopra Steria implemented a large-scale AI initiative for meemoo, utilizing speech recognition, entity recognition, and a custom-built facial recognition tool. The solution successfully identified 3.3 million faces, tagged approximately 6.5 million named entities, and transcribed 560 million words, accomplishing decades of work in mere months. This project, delivered by Sopra Steria, significantly enhanced the accessibility of Flanders' cultural heritage and was recognized with three prestigious awards in 2023.
