Fresno Unified School District Revolutionizing language access in education

Fresno Unified School District, the third largest district in California, needed a faster, more consistent way to translate content for its 73,000 students and families across more than 30 languages. Its Translation and Interpretation Services team wanted to meet ambitious turnaround goals for IEPs and other materials, but the district’s manual translation process was too slow, inconsistent, and costly. Smartling’s translation management solution was brought in to support the district’s needs.

Smartling implemented a centralized translation workflow with style guides, glossaries, translation memory, and its CAT tool to improve consistency and efficiency. The district also gained centralized reporting to better track volume and budget needs. As a result, Fresno Unified is moving toward its goals of a 30-day IEP turnaround and 72-hour turnaround for other materials, while improving reliability and influencing other departments to adopt technology for translation.
