Case Study: World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) achieves global multilingual Earth Hour reach with Smartling

A Smartling Case Study

Preview of the WWF Case Study

Creating a dynamic Earth Hour website for global viewers

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) runs Earth Hour to raise global awareness about climate change, but needed a better way to reach international audiences year‑round. Their non‑English Earth Hour sites were largely static, translations were handled manually via error‑prone Excel spreadsheets, and the team had limited budget and no dedicated translators to convert dynamic content into Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish and English.

WWF adopted Smartling’s Translation Cloud, using its web proxy to automate content exchange and Smartling Language Services for professional human translators, replacing the spreadsheet workflow and enabling continual updates with minimal effort. The change helped power Earth Hour 2019 across 188 countries and territories and generated over 2 billion social impressions for #EarthHour and #Connect2Earth, while allowing WWF to keep the movement active globally year‑round.
