Quest Software Uses AQtime to Build a Better Toad

Quest Software, maker of the Toad database development tool, faced customer reports during its beta that Toad was sluggish and consumed too much memory. Having rewritten parts of Toad in C#, the team struggled with unfamiliar .NET behaviors—particularly garbage collection and string handling—which made it hard to diagnose performance bottlenecks empirically.

They turned to the AQtime profiler to analyze and fix issues; AQtime’s UI and diagnostics helped uncover memory leaks and slow code paths. After fixes, overall performance improved significantly (one query-result population case dropped from 15 seconds to 1 second), most beta concerns were addressed, and Quest plans to add AQtime coverage profiling into future smoke tests.
