Statoil Reaches Section TD in One Run in High-Well-Density Statfjord Field

Statoil needed to drill an 8½-in reentry section in the high-well-density Statfjord field, where close-proximity wells, severe packoffs, and hole-cleaning limitations made the job difficult. SLB recommended using the PowerDrive Orbit rotary steerable system along with WARP fluids technology to help maintain directional control and manage the demanding flow requirements.

SLB used PowerDrive Orbit RSS, collar RPM cessation surveys, and magnetic ranging to avoid nearby producing wells and improve hole cleaning while drilling on target. Statoil reached the 950-m section TD in one run, maintained safe separation from offset wells, and averaged 25 m/h over the first 475 m despite 90–100% stick/slip severity.
