PowerDrive Xcel Rotary Steerable System Helps Save 5 Days of Drilling Time in Statfjord Field North Sea

Statoil ASA worked with SLB to drill multiple reentry wells in Statfjord field, a North Sea environment with high magnetic interference. The main challenge was maintaining accurate directional and trajectory control while kicking off near producing wells, without shutting in those offset wells.

SLB used the PowerDrive Xcel Rotary Steerable System with inertial steering mode to drill close to live producers while keeping production online. The solution was deployed successfully across four field runs and four wells, helping Statoil avoid collisions and save an estimated 5 days of rig time while proving the system’s expanded operating envelope.
