Case Study: Statoil achieves a single-run reservoir section and eliminates 75 hours of NPT with SLB's i-Power motor-bit modeling service

A SLB Case Study

Preview of the Statoil Case Study

i-Power service enables motor-elastomer combination that eliminated 75 h of NPT and beat previous records for field section length by 60% and pumping hours by 67%

Statoil worked with SLB to address repeated nonproductive time while drilling a 5¾-in reservoir section in the Kvitebjørn Field in the North Sea. The well was being drilled in an abrasive, high-pressure, high-temperature environment using through-tubing drilling, managed pressure drilling techniques, and a positive displacement motor, but previous motor failures had prevented any operator from completing the section in a single run.

SLB used its i-Power integrated motor-bit modeling service to identify a durable motor and elastomer combination, selecting the PowerPak hard rubber motor with the DynaPower XR extreme-wear-resistant motor elastomer. This solution allowed Statoil to drill the entire reservoir section in one run with no stalls, eliminate 75 hours of NPT, and set field records for run length, below-rotary hours, and pumping hours, while increasing section length by 60% and pumping hours by 67% versus previous records.
