A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Statoil in the North Sea Statfjord field, where the operator needed to sidetrack, drill, and enlarge a challenging 12¼-in × 13½-in section while keeping directional control, avoiding hole collapse, and maintaining a smooth dogleg below 45° in a formation prone to creep and collision risk. The operation also needed to minimize openhole exposure and reduce the time required to run and cement an 11¾-in liner to target depth.
SLB designed an integrated BHA using the Rhino RHE dual-reamer rathole-elimination system, PowerDrive Xceed RSS, C-Link IMAG communication, TeleScope telemetry, and arcVISION services. The system drilled and underreamed the 601-m interval and 49-m rathole in one run, eliminated a dedicated rathole cleanout run, and allowed the liner to be run and cemented successfully, saving Statoil 1.5 drilling days and about USD 425,000.
