Target, the large retail chain, faced a need to harness grassroots engineering innovation while replacing fragmented collaboration tools with a secure, scalable platform—quickly. Engineers were already using Slack informally, but Target needed an enterprise‑grade solution rolled out before the holiday peak to improve communication, onboarding and problem solving.

Target deployed Slack Enterprise Grid to thousands of engineers in under a month, integrated it with tools like GitHub and Jira, and built custom bots (Rocky Raccoon, Flottbot and Pinguin) to onboard users, pin important updates and reduce repetitive support. The result: faster troubleshooting, clearer threaded conversations, quicker onboarding, measurable engagement (Pinguin triggered nearly 7,000 times) and broader adoption across digital, recruiting, strategy and BI teams.
