RE:ACT mobilises military veterans for Covid-19 relief efforts with Slack

RE:ACT Disaster Response is a UK charity that mobilises military veterans and volunteers for rapid disaster relief. When Covid-19 hit, the organisation faced a sudden influx of thousands of sign-ups and hundreds of new volunteers, creating information overload and a need to coordinate distributed teams and time‑sensitive operations quickly and securely.

RE:ACT relied on Slack as its central collaboration platform—running two workspaces, focused channels, multi‑channel guest access, custom emoji reactions and bots/integrations (GDACS, Zapier, Mailchimp) to automate alerts and reduce email. The setup let them scale almost overnight: volunteer guest volume jumped 67% in April, teams exchanged tens of thousands of messages, and the organisation trained hundreds and helped install 1,000+ hospital beds, distribute 5.5M+ PPE items and deliver 2.3M+ meals while keeping communications fast and organized.
