A Slack Case Study

How Slack became Nine’s productivity platform and helped rewrite its culture story

Nine, Australia’s largest locally owned media company, was struggling with fragmented communication after merging multiple divisions that used different email and messaging systems. With more than 5,000 employees across news, broadcast, print, and digital teams, the company needed a better way to collaborate quickly, support breaking news workflows, and build a shared culture while preserving each brand’s identity. Slack became the central productivity platform used across the business.

Slack rolled out across Nine to connect teams in channels, enable faster “swarming” on breaking news, automate routine work, and support real-time executive Q&A during all-hands meetings. The results were significant: tasks that once took days now take as little as 30 minutes, internal email use has dropped sharply, and about half of journalist and editor issues are resolved directly in Slack. Nine says Slack has improved collaboration, reduced friction, and strengthened workplace culture.
