A SITA Case Study
Large International Airport faced the challenge of tracking arriving and transfer baggage to meet IATA Resolution 753 amid high bag volumes, shared-use belts and the impracticality of manual tracking. The airport engaged SITA and its SITA Bag Trac solution (working with SITA Bag Manager and SITA Bag Journey) to provide automated arrival and transfer bag scanning using ATRs.
SITA installed SITA Bag Trac ATRs over passenger claim and transfer belts, integrated with SITA Bag Manager/Bag Journey and tracking APIs to provide common‑use, multi‑carrier tag reads, first/last bag displays and routed tracking data to airlines. The deployment gave airlines real‑time visibility of incoming transfer bags, improved monitoring of delivery service levels, and contributed to lower mishandling rates and operational cost savings — important in an industry that handled 4.3 billion bags in 2019 with 45% of mishandling occurring during transfer.
