A SITA Case Study
Hollywood Burbank Airport, a regional airport serving Los Angeles-area leisure travelers, faced the twin challenges of operating from an aging, space-constrained terminal and rapidly changing airline mixes after the COVID-19 downturn — including new low-cost carriers such as Avelo and Frontier. To modernize operations and prepare a 14-gate replacement terminal, the airport turned to SITA and its Airport Management System (AMS), alongside common‑use technologies, to help manage capacity without expanding the physical footprint.
SITA’s AMS and common‑use capabilities were implemented to give Hollywood Burbank Airport a real‑time overview of operations, flexible gate allocation, and better control of passenger flows to enable touchless and health‑safety measures. As a result, the airport improved operational agility to accommodate new carriers, manage increased passenger throughput, and position itself for a return to pre‑pandemic volumes (nearly 6 million annual passengers in 2019) while streamlining the passenger journey. SITA’s technology has therefore become central to the airport’s operational resilience and terminal redesign.
