Automated Baggage Rules Collect Baggage Charges and Ensure Interline Compliance

Airline Company faced operational and revenue risks after it changed baggage policies and an interline partner adopted different allowances, creating confusion in reservations and ticketing, unexpected passenger charges, and occasional debit memos. To address this, Airline Company deployed SITA’s Automated Baggage Rules — a feature of the SITA Airfare pricing system integrated with SITA Ticketing — to automate baggage rule processing and distribution.

SITA implemented a real-time rules engine that applies IATA/MSC processing and integrates baggage allowance and excess-fee data into fare quotes and tickets without agent intervention. As a result, fare displays and tickets now consistently show the correct baggage information, eliminating surprises for agents and passengers, preventing the debit memos caused by interline rule errors, and improving interline compliance and ancillary revenue collection.
