Curve is a payments startup that lets users combine multiple cards into one smart card and app, simplifying spending and offering features like currency savings and instant cashback. As Curve scaled, fraudsters exploited the ability to add new cards quickly, forcing costly manual reviews and rising chargebacks that threatened growth and operational efficiency.
Curve implemented a layered fraud program by integrating Sift’s real-time machine-learning scores with its in-house rules engine, automating reviews and blocking suspicious activity before cards were issued. The result: fraud management no longer requires a whole team (only one additional full-time resource), workflows are streamlined for faster investigations, and chargebacks fell by roughly 80%—to about one-sixth of their former rate.
