AI-powered SVAR helps gauge impact of English training program scientifically

The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation needed a scalable, objective way to measure whether spoken English training improved employability for young job seekers across India. To run a longitudinal baseline and end-line study covering diverse regions, accents and connectivity conditions, the foundation selected SHL’s SVAR AI‑powered spoken English assessment.

SHL implemented SVAR — a cloud‑based, AI and voice‑recognition test aligned to CEFR that auto-scores pronunciation, fluency, listening, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension in about 15 minutes via smartphone, PC or IVR. The solution evaluated 15,000 applicants, standardized and benchmarked results, removed human subjectivity, worked reliably in low‑connectivity settings, and improved candidate experience while producing objective, actionable “hire”/“train” recommendations.
