AltaGas, a Calgary-based gas and utilities company, faced rising governance, risk and compliance complexity after its 2017 acquisition of WGL Energy. Differing cybersecurity and compliance processes between the two companies, low maturity scores, dispersed data across multiple platforms, manual multi-signature approvals and a “spreadsheet nightmare” for issue tracking made integration and effective risk management difficult.

AltaGas implemented ServiceNow’s out-of-the-box GRC Risk Management module, completing a seven-step deployment in about six weeks (45 days) without customization. The solution centralized a register of more than 180 risk factors from 15 data sources, automated the risk acceptance process, and put all risk information on a single page—quickly boosting maturity scores and better aligning AltaGas’s and WGL’s security processes while paving the way for Policy and Compliance implementation.
