Vitens - Customer Case Study

Vitens, the largest drinking water utility in the Netherlands, faced the challenge of influencing consumer behaviour to reduce peak water usage and safeguard its infrastructure. Partnering with Sensus, they sought to use innovative technology and serious gaming to understand if they could change habits, particularly by engaging younger generations.

The solution involved a three-month trial using Sensus smart meters and the FlexNet® communications network to collect granular water usage data from participants. This data fueled a serious game called The Water Battle, which educated players on water conservation. The Sensus-enabled trial was highly successful, achieving a 90% increase in awareness about reducing peak consumption and a 7% reduction in water usage during peak times, which translates to an annual saving of 23 million cubic meters of water for Vitens.
