Redwood City Leverages FlexNet Features for Innovative Conservation Program

The City of Redwood City, a rapidly-growing community in California, faced severe water shortages due to a multi-year drought. Their challenge was to implement a proactive conservation program to avoid heavy rationing and penalties, but their existing monthly meter reading technology was insufficient. They needed a system to provide real-time data to both the utility and its customers to enable proactive water management. They turned to vendor Sensus for a solution.

Sensus implemented its FlexNet Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, which provided reliable, hourly meter readings and enabled the city's innovative Budget-Based Rates Program. The results were significant, with the program saving over 80 million gallons of water in its first year, a 15% reduction. Customers gained real-time access to their usage data, could avoid higher billing tiers, and the utility identified and fixed numerous leaks. The Sensus FlexNet solution was a complete success, earning the city awards for its conservation efforts.
