Maine Water District Deploys Fixed-Base Network and Composite Smart Water Meters

The Kennebec Water District, a historic utility in Maine, faced the challenge of an inefficient and labor-intensive manual meter reading process. They also sought a modern water management solution that was intelligent and compliant with new materials standards. To address this, they partnered with the vendor Sensus.

Sensus implemented its FlexNet advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system and iPERL composite meters, which provide two-way wireless communication. This solution delivered immediate operational efficiencies by automating daily meter reads, eliminating the need for manual collection and reducing manpower and vehicle costs. It also dramatically improved customer service by enabling the utility to quickly identify and alert customers to abnormal usage patterns, such as leaks, saving water and preventing property damage.
