Garden City, Kansas - Customer Case Study

The city of Garden City, Kansas, faced challenges with its outdated manual meter reading processes for electricity and water, which incurred extra costs and led to estimation-based billing and customer complaints. They sought a single, fixed-base advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution to provide remote reading and improve accuracy. The city turned to its existing vendor, Sensus, for a solution using the FlexNet AMI communications network.

Sensus implemented its FlexNet system and installed iConA electric meters while upgrading existing water meters with new registers. This provided a single network for both utilities, enabling remote data collection every 15 minutes. The results for Garden City included a projected three-year ROI on the $3.3 million project, highly accurate billing that improved customer satisfaction, remote connect/disconnect capabilities, and advanced leak detection for the water system.
