Hinge, the popular dating app focused on helping people build meaningful long-term connections, needed to adapt quickly when COVID made in-person dates impossible. To keep users connected and support safer dating, Hinge looked for a way to add in-app voice and video calling using a third-party API provider that could deliver security, reliability, and fast time to market.

Hinge chose Sendbird’s in-app voice and video calling API to launch 1:1 audio and video chat inside the app. Sendbird helped Hinge roll out the feature in about five weeks across five markets, with high-quality, secure calls that integrated with Hinge’s existing chat experience. The results were strong: 70% of users were open to virtual dating, 67% said their first video chat was fun, and 50% of users who tried video calls planned to keep using them.
