RunKeeper, used by more than 30 million people, launched Breeze — a passive activity app that tracks movement and calories in the background. The Breeze team faced a technical challenge: how to open and run the app automatically from rest without draining users’ batteries, while also getting the analytics needed to optimize background tracking and engage users with timely push notifications.

RunKeeper implemented Segment as a single wrapper SDK, creating custom events that tie into GPS, movement, and accelerometer data and routing that data to tools like Google Analytics and Localytics. Segment let the team run rapid experiments on background triggers and push content, improving retention and reducing battery use, while simplifying integrations so new tools can be turned on with a flip of a switch rather than heavy engineering work.
