How Smartcar used Twilio Segment to unlock customer insights and overhaul its onboarding experience

Smartcar, founded in 2015, provides a hardware‑free API that lets apps access and control vehicles across manufacturers. As a two‑sided product serving developers and the vehicle owners who authorize access, Smartcar lacked visibility into how developers used the API and where end users dropped off during authorization. Different teams also needed different analytics tools (Mixpanel, Intercom, S3), and there was no single way to collect and route event data to satisfy everyone.

Smartcar implemented Segment to centralize event collection and forward data to Mixpanel, Intercom, and Amazon S3, giving teams the insights they needed without sacrificing tool choice. Insights drove a dashboard redesign that raised app completion from 8% to 30% (a 22 percentage‑point increase), cut demo steps from 10 clicks to 4 and demo time to under a minute, increased targeted email open rates by 10%, and exposed authorization flow pain points so Smartcar could prioritize vehicle support and personalize communications.
