Making the Budgeting Process Effortless

SMA Group, a leading French insurer with over €2.5 billion in turnover and 3,000 employees serving 200,000 clients, faced fragmented project management and disconnected budgeting processes across its ISD and BA teams. Project practices, strategic planning and budget tracking were handled in different tools and formats, limiting visibility for business managers, making budget preparation labor-intensive, and complicating resource trade-offs across projects and organizations.

With guidance from PMO-Performance, SMA selected Sciforma and implemented a PPM-based governance model centered on about ten business portfolios, shared project plans, portfolio-level budgets (k€ and man-days), and capacity simulations. Rolled out by the PMO and paired BA/ISD managers, the solution centralized 256 projects by January 2015 and — despite change-management challenges — delivered much lighter budget cycles, near-instant monitoring reports for controllers, greater transparency, fewer ad hoc requests, and more efficient resource planning.
