Alaska Airlines upgrades boarding by using iPad Minis to scan documents away from the gate

Alaska Airlines faced the challenge of a cumbersome and static boarding process that relied on expensive, stationary hardware including dedicated scanners, monitors, PCs, and podiums at the gate. This setup was costly to maintain and created queues, hindering the airline's goal of delivering superior customer service through digital transformation. To upgrade this critical process, they partnered with Scandit to find a high-performance mobile scanning solution for barcode and text recognition (OCR) to replace their old system.

The solution implemented Scandit's barcode scanning and OCR technology on iPad Minis, enabling 5,000 gate agents to become mobile and scan boarding passes and passports anywhere. This mobile approach eliminated the need for the previous hardware setup and its associated costs. The result was a greatly improved customer experience, with agents able to facilitate efficient and painless boarding away from the gate, helping Alaska Airlines maintain its leading edge in innovation and customer satisfaction.
