A Samsara Case Study
Project Open Hand is a San Francisco nonprofit that delivers nutritious meals to vulnerable populations—roughly 2,500 meals a day across 16 sites. During COVID‑19 demand surged (meal deliveries +93%, grocery deliveries nearly +200%), putting pressure on its 21‑vehicle fleet and making real‑time visibility into driver locations, vehicle health, and safety critical for keeping routes on time and managing exposure risk.
Using Samsara’s real‑time GPS, preventative‑maintenance dashboard, and AI dash cams, Project Open Hand gained live location tracking, early alerts on mechanical issues, and objective driver behavior insights for coaching. The result: fewer status calls, faster and targeted vehicle repairs (extending fleet life and averting at least one major breakdown), improved driver safety coaching, better contact‑tracing capability, and increased leadership confidence that critical deliveries continue reliably.
