How Rainbow is Evolving Product Displays on Mobile

Rainbow is an 81-year-old, moderately priced retailer with more than 1,100 stores and a pronounced mobile presence—about 70% of its traffic comes from mobile. That shift forced Rainbow to rethink how it presents product assortments on small screens: mobile visits are more frequent and exploratory, and shoppers need to see relevant items in the first four product images or they’ll abandon the page.

To address this, Rainbow experimented with and implemented creative sort strategies that prioritize the optimal first items on each mobile grid, and designed the experience around shopper-first metrics instead of legacy visit/session views. The result was faster connections between shoppers and products, a stronger mobile shopping journey and measurable increases in mobile revenue.
