A RWS Case Study
U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys (Camp Humphreys), home to the 2nd Infantry ROK–U.S. Combined Division, faced a persistent language barrier between U.S. and South Korean personnel. Limited access to professional interpreters, word‑for‑word dictionaries, and slow document translation hindered daily operations, so the Army sought a secure, on‑premise solution that could translate Korean↔English, integrate with its Transverse chat client, be available to all personnel, and meet strict military security requirements.
SDL (now part of RWS) supplied its SDL Machine Translation (Language Weaver) for trial and on‑premise deployment, integrating a browser‑based portal with the Transverse chat client and satisfying security criteria. Installed in 1–2 days with minimal support, the system provides instant chat translation and same‑day document translation across the garrison, improving comprehension, reducing misunderstandings, and speeding issue resolution for roughly 10,000 personnel.
