Alfa Laval Separates Complexity from the Localization Process

Alfa Laval, a 130‑year‑old Swedish manufacturer of heat‑transfer, separation and fluid‑handling equipment with operations in 100 countries and more than 18,000 employees, needed to translate millions of words of technical documentation into 25 languages. Rapid growth and acquisitions swelled the volume of manuals while a manual copy‑and‑paste workflow and vendor‑owned translation memories caused errors, delays, duplicated effort and uncontrolled translation costs.

Alfa Laval implemented SDL’s Translation Management Solution integrated with its CMS to automate content extraction and apply translation memory and perfect‑match capabilities. The result: local language documentation in about half the time, roughly 86% perfect word matches, nearly 94% content reuse, and twice as much translated output with half the resources—boosting quality, consistency and control over translation spend.
