Island Transit Trims Inventory by 13 Days Using RTA’s Barcoding Solution

Island Transit, based in Coupeville, WA, is a public transit provider offering bus, paratransit and vanpool services across Island County. Its full-service garage maintains about 8,000 parts (worth roughly $700,000), and because of the island’s remote location and delivery delays, the manual inventory process—performed by two people—took about 14 days and was becoming prohibitively time-consuming.

To streamline parts tracking, Island Transit implemented RTA’s Barcoding solution, adding three tricoders and barcoding roughly 95% of inventory. Staff now scan parts to log them automatically in the fleet system; with four to five people, inventory is completed in one day—trimming the cycle by 13 days, cutting labor, and reducing vehicle downtime.
