How to boost volunteer engagement three proven tips for success from Ohio University’s Collegiate baseball team

Ohio University College of Business supports the Southern Ohio Copperheads, a student‑run professional team used as a “learning laboratory” for sport management students. The challenge was to boost volunteer engagement, recruitment, scheduling and retention across at least 21 summer games while giving students vocational experience and clear career pathways. Rosterfy’s volunteer management platform was used to streamline recruitment, scheduling, training, automations and screening to support this model.

Rosterfy’s solution supported the College’s three‑pillar approach—credit‑bearing roles, recreating vocational conditions, and built‑in career pathways—making it easier to coordinate roughly 60 of the program’s 400 undergraduates who staff the team each season. The result was stronger engagement and retention, smoother operations for events and training, and measurable career outcomes, with Copperheads alumni progressing to roles at organizations including the Cleveland Indians and San Antonio Spurs.
