World Market, a retailer with more than 200 U.S. stores and 5,000 employees, faced rapid, company-wide change in 2020 — pandemic-driven shifts to hybrid work, new safety protocols across stores and distribution centers, and a transition from public to private ownership. Leadership recognized that their existing values and culture needed rethinking to align employees across verticals and support major organizational change.
Partnering with QuestionPro Workforce, HR used surveys and focus groups to gather employee input, then refined six values down to three—authenticity, respect and empowerment—updated the mission, launched a new intranet and training, and embedded values into hiring and performance processes. Executive sponsorship, consistent storytelling and broad recognition drove strong participation and positive feedback, increasing employee buy-in and setting the stage for ongoing culture change and future surveys.
