Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust - Customer Case Study

Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, which employs 4,500 staff delivering hospital, outpatient and community services across a 1,500‑mile radius to 500,000 patients a year, sought to improve staff engagement in 2015. While board-led face‑to‑face events helped, the trust struggled to reach staff in remote community settings and those working irregular shifts, limiting the value of engagement activities and staff survey follow‑up.

The trust launched a web‑based platform branded "Staff Voice," embedded in the intranet and promoted through multiple channels. The tool runs polls, surveys and discussion threads, hosts an innovation hub and a swap area, and links to HR data to produce regular reports that highlight morale and early signs of disengagement. Within 12 months staff were sharing best practice, contributing ideas and giving positive feedback; the platform enabled targeted interventions, ongoing recognition plans and upcoming features such as anonymous raising of concerns and live executive chats.
