Serco Expects $2 Million in Media and Management Savings Using Integrated DXi and Scalar Data Protection Solution

Serco’s Global Technology Delivery team was facing rapidly growing storage demands on its Common Delivery Infrastructure (CDI), which had expanded from 50TB to 800TB and was projected to reach 5PB within five years. Their legacy tape-based backup could not keep up—backup windows ran from Friday evening to Monday morning, restores could take one to two days, media management was labor-intensive, and projected tape infrastructure costs were escalating into millions.

Serco deployed an integrated Quantum solution—DXi8500 deduplicating disk systems, Scalar i500 tape libraries and CommVault software—managed centrally with Quantum Vision. Deduplication cut stored data by up to 96% (reducing replicated data from 480TB to 85TB), sped ingest to 8TB/hr, cut restore times by fivefold to under four hours, improved DR through encrypted replication, and is projected to save about $2 million in media and management costs over five years.
